What is United Readers?
United Readers is a United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) AmeriCorps program designed to support the literacy acquisition and kindergarten readiness skills to improve third-grade reading scores in Washoe County School District. This program operates through two types of mentors, Early Childhood Mentors, and In-School Reading Mentors. We are currently prioritizing the hire of In-School Reading Mentors. Full-time opportunity with a stipend provided!In-School Reading Mentors:
Assist children virtually in kindergarten through third grade in the Washoe County School District with literacy acquisition skills to improve reading and reading fluency. Mentors will work with the school, classroom teachers, and specialists to provide literacy supports to identified children. Mentors serve an average of 36 hours a week, November through May, and receive a modest living allowance.
Details/Important Dates:
- Members will begin training early November 2020. Applications are open & will be accepted until all positions are filled. Please note, background checks will be required and do take time.
- Members will serve 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM Mondays through Fridays. Holidays will be observed with stipend pay. Some events may require attendance in the evenings or on a weekend.
